Abstract

Network File System(NFS) is a distributed file system that allows users to access files that are stored over a network. This is a most common and widely used file system for the entire software industry and academia for 30+ years now. Despite being commonly used file systems for its advantages, certain drawbacks of NFS are well-known. Technologies like AFS (Andrew File System), cloud storage systems, samba, etc. are developed to circumvent them and work with the stopgaps. But it is time to find an alternative that is more reliable and scalable solution to get past the productivity and efficiency standard set by NFS and improve the overall software performance. In this paper, we propose to use Object storage as a replacement for NFS and discuss the advantages and disadvantages. Replacing NFS with Object storage is not straight forward due to serious underlying limitations of Object storage. This article provides a solution to overcome a limitation that can provide inspiration to find solutions to all the other limitations. This effort would inspire to enable the full-scale usage of Object storage over NFS.
