Abstract

Controversy over the role of the student in the university has produced a dissonant atmosphere in which to initiate improvement. Even well-meaning, liberal administrators have found student beligerance and forcible takeovers beyond their range of tolerance. The problem fre quently is not the nature of the change desired, but rather the way in which demands for change are registered. In addition, demands which are reasonable and useful for improvement are usu ally a part of a package deal with other less ra tional and responsible components. It is to be hoped that the discordant nature of the protests will not discourage college faculties from initiating much needed changes in their instructional programs and that a retaliatory withdrawal of public support from the university will not hinder program im provement.
