Abstract

The present paper proposes that one can easily observe either the relaxation time of the 1000 level or that of the 0110 level in a CO2 laser system under cw excitation by use of rotating-mirror Q-switching techniques. It is mentioned here that the optimum repetition time Tropt for the laser pulse height corresponds to the relaxation time of the 0110 level (τ010) and the cutoff pulse interval Troff for the second pulse corresponds to the relaxation time of the 1000 level (τ100). When the CO2 (1.8 Torr)-He (7.2 Torr) mixture was sealed in a water-cooled Pyrex tube 20 mm in inside diameter and 170 cm in length, Tropt was measured to be 7 msec and Troff was 40 μsec, at a discharge current of 15 mA. These values were in satisfactory agreement with the values of τ010 and τ100 previously obtained by pulse-excitation techniques.
