Abstract

Photon-correlation spectroscopy was performed to observe relaxation modes in an antiferroelectric liquid crystal (R)-MHPOBC. A phase mode in the SmI A * phase, which is the same as one in the incommensurate phase of solid, was observed for the first time. From the dispersion relations of the Goldstone modes in the SmC γ * and SmC A * phases, the ratios of orientational elastic constants to the viscosity coefficient were obtained as a function of temperature. A linear temperature dependence of the inverse pitch in the SmC A * phase was also found, which was discussed on the basis of the phenomenological theory.
