Abstract

The electricity generating industry uses bolts in steam power plant in the many joints which need to be seperated for maintenance or repairs. The real plastic deformation of the pipe flange joints which causes a superimposed bending stress in the bolts and the interaction between flange, bolts and gasket could also only be checked by experimental investigations on model flanges. To simulate the stress situation of the turbine casing different ferritic and the austenitic bolt models were tested up to a test time of more than 40 000 h in a research project. During the tests on-line strain and the displacement measurements are perfomed. The distance between the two flanges is measured on three different points as well as the strain of three sleeves and the deformation (in axial and circumferential direction) of the flange using the capacitve strain gages.
