Liang, E. P. T. Abstract The paper studies shock formations from one-dimensional simple waves in special relativity and Friedmann background universes. General formulas are derived for the damping and entropy production rate as functions of the shock strength, both in the limit of weak and strong shocks. These results are applicable to entropy-production and galaxy-formation problems in the early universe. The hodograph method for solving the special one-dimensional relativistic flow problem is also given.
