Abstract
This work describes the distribution of epithelial and sub‐epithelial pigments in the mantle, and their association with shell lip colour, ground colour and banding pattern in Cepaea nemoralis (L.) and Cepaea hortensis (MUll). Epithelial pigment at the mantle edge is highly correlated with darkness of the shell lip, and zones of reddish‐brownepithelial pigment are associated with the shell banding pattern. The density of sub‐epithelial melanocytes in the mantle appears to be independent of the shell ground colour or depth of colour, but melanocytes are frequently aggregated into bands which correspond with the epithelial pigment zones and the shell bands. There are some indications that the reddish‐brown epithelial pigment develops before the sub‐epithelial melanocytes.
