Abstract

Abstract The Mg concentration of whole apple fruit samples (less seeds and stem) on a fresh weight basis is frequently a significant function of both K and Ca concentration. Mg concentration calculated from the regression ppm Mg = 15.95 + 0.0204 ppm K + 0.226 ppm Ca was usually close to observed Mg. The observed positive coefficient for Ca of about 0.2 is consistent with a movement of Mg with Ca into apples via xylem in a ratio of about 1:5, a common ratio in xylem sap.
