Abstract
Children (n = 2400) ages three to five were tested for their cognitive style (field dependence independence) and their play behaviors were observed and recorded. A repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated that main effects were highly significant for cognitive style, play behaviors, and age. Apparently, FD and Fl individuals played differently. That is, Fl children engaged more in play than did FD ones. A repeated measures MANOVA for the children's play behaviors was found to be significant by the Wilks’ Lambda Criterion. A significant interaction was found for age, cognitive style, and play, indicating substantial differences for some play behaviors but not for others. Comparisons of the FD and Fl children's play behaviors showed that Fl children exhibited more play behaviors than did FD children.
