Abstract

A periodic bond chain (PBC) analysis of the topaz [Al 2SiO 4(F,OH) 2] structure reveals six unique PBCs: 〈001〉, 〈110〉, 〈100〉, 〈101〉, 〈111〉, and 〈211〉. From these, several several crystal forms were predicted to be important: {110}, {001}, {011}, {111}, {112}, {120}, {113}, {231}, {010}, and {101}. Forms observed in natural crystals agree well with those predicted. In addition, surface microtopography, such as striations and polygonized spiral-growth hillocks, shows linear features that coincide with PBC directions.
