Abstract

The pre-ocular tear film (POTF) has several functions that can be grouped under three general headings: optical, protective, and lubricative1. The tear film provides a smooth optical surface to the strongest refractive element of the ocular system by compensating for the micro-irregularities of the corneal epithelium or the contact lens surface.2 The tear film also plays an essential role in the maintenance of ocular integrity, by removing foreign bodies from the front surface of the eye, thus supplying antimicrobial3 and mechanical4 protection to the corneal epithelium. Any anomaly of the POTF may therefore have significant deleterious effects. Such anomalies have a multitude of causes, from excessive contamination to abnormal structure or insufficient tear volume.
