Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between macular epiretinal membranes (ERMs) and retinal impact sites after intraretinal foreign bodies (IRFBs) injuries managed by vitrectomy. Methods Ten patients (10 eyes) with IRFBs injuries managed by vitrectomy were prospectively investigated,by fundus fluorescent angiography (FFA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) of macular 2 to 6 months postoperatively. Results Three patients (30%) showed macular ERMs.There were totally 5 patients whose nearest point of the retinal impact zone were within 2.5PD to fovea, and all the 3 patients with macular ERMs belonged to the 5 patients. All the 3 patients had a common condition that the scar zone and hyperfluorescence zone enlarged from the impact zone.Of the 3patients,2 had a condition that the impact side of the macular ERMs was more serious. Conclusions The macular ERMs frequently occur after IRFBs injuries managed by vitrectomy. The patient with the near retinal impact site to fovea has more chance to develop subsequent macular ERMs. Key words: IRFB; Vitrectomy; Macular epiretinal membrane; Impact site; FFA; OCT
