Abstract
Objective To explore the mediating effect of coping style on the relationship between hope and psychological distress among patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods The Distress Management, Herth Hope Index and Cancer Coping Modes Questionnaire were administered to 181 patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy. A mediation analysis was performed. Results Significant negative correlation was found between psychological distress and hope (r=-0.274,P<0.05), while the correlation between psychological distress and avoidance and suppression, resignation, fantasy, catharses were positive (r=0.320,0.367,0.219,0.323,P<0.01). Resignation,fantasy,catharses mediated partly the relationship between hope and psychological distress. Conclusions Hope,coping style have mediating effect on psychological distress. Hope that low levels of the patients tend to use resignation, fantasy, catharses coping style, thereby increasing the psychological distress. It's a reminder that managing hope level and improving the coping style can manage psychological distress of patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy.
