Abstract

Empirical relationships between fracture spacing and bed thickness are established for a number of rock types. The influence of the thickness of adjacent incompetent layers and also the lithology of the competent beds on fracture spacing are indicated; and possible mechanisms leading to the development of these relationships are briefly discussed.
