Abstract

Cenozoic volcanism in the Andes occurs near the boundary of convergent oceanic and continental lithospheric plates. In Chile, the K concentration in the calc-alkalic volcanic rocks increases with the calculated depth to the Benioff zone; however, the correlation is very poor. The Sr concentration in the andesitic rocks correlates very well with the calculated depth to the Benioff zone, with the Sr concentration increasing with depth.
