Abstract

We investigated effects of quenching temperature and ageing on variations of vacancies concentration and segregation of solute atoms and their relationship with damping capacity in an Fe-Mn alloy. The damping capacity can be remarkably improved by lowering vacancies concentration but deteriorated by segregation of carbon atoms. A higher damping capacity can be obtained by furnace cooling or quenching and then ageing in Fe-Mn alloy with lower carbon content or addition of Ti or Nb.
