Abstract
Cultural competence (CC), or the ability to provide high-quality health care within the context of a patient’s race, ethnicity, language, religious beliefs, or behaviors, is an essential component of professional practice. This study aimed to determine the relationship between students’ level of CC and their ability to provide CC care. Athletic training students in 62 accredited undergraduate athletic training programs (N = 421) completed a survey that included 20 questions to determine CC and one question regarding confi dence in delivering care. On calculation of means and standard deviations, one correlation sought to identify relationship, and ANOVA with contrasts was utilized to determine diff erences in CC by confi dence level. Results demonstrated that athletic training students were culturally aware, but not profi cient, while having high levels of confi dence in delivering appropriate care. The correlation results demonstrated a lack of relationship between confi dence and CC, whereas ANOVA results were signifi cantly diff erent between cohorts.
