Abstract

Background and Objective Bariatric surgery is one of methods for treatment of morbid obesity. Psychological factors can affect its outcome. This study aims to investigate the relationship between coping strategies and the outcome of bariatric surgery in patients with morbid obesity. Materials & Methods This prospective observational study was conducted on 85 patients who underwent bariatric surgery in the obesity clinic of Hazrat-e Rasul Akram and Milad Hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Subjects were evaluated before and two years after surgery using Folkman & Lazarus’ ways of coping questionnaire and the Bariatric Analysis and Reporting Outcome System (BAROS). Results During the follow-up, 9 patients left the study. The mean age of participants was 38.11±11.5 years (ranged 17-65 years). Problem-focused coping strategies and their components had a significant positive relationship with the surgery outcome (P<0.05), but emotion-focused coping strategies had no significant relationship with the surgery outcome (P>0.05). Conclusion Problem-focused coping strategies can predict the outcome of bariatric surgery.
