Abstract

Among pupae of Hyalophora cecropia in diapause, the size of fat body cells (measured from the fresh tissue) is correlated with the body weight, suggesting that there may be an approximately constant number of fat body cells per individual. The size of epidermal cells (measured from the cuticular plaques on an abdominal segment), on the other hand, is independent of body weight, so that there is an approximately constant number of cells per unit area.
