Abstract

1. 1. Venous blood, sinus fluid and lymph from the ductus subintestinalis of Myxine glutinosa L. have been analysed for haematocrit, and content and composition of proteins. 2. 2. The venous blood had haematocrit values ranging from 20–25. The sinus fluid always contained red blood cells in varying amounts from half of that of venous blood to values similar to it. 3. 3. The protein content of blood and sinus fluid was very similar with average values of 4.9 and 4.7 g/100 ml respectively. 4. 4. The lymph contained no red cells and its protein content was about 2.0 g/100 ml. 5. 5. The blood and sinus fluid showed a close correspondence in the composition of plasma proteins. 6. 6. It is concluded that the sinus fluid cannot be considered a lymphatic space. The red cell content and protein composition suggest that the sinus fluid must be considered to be true blood.
