Abstract

An Index of General Growth Rate (IGR) (height in inches – 2 x age at menarche in whole years) was calculated for (1) 146 women for whom fingernail growth rates measured previously were analyzed for separate periods during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and (2) forty-five student nurses for whom over-all mean nail growth rates had also been determined independently. The IGR was significantly positively related to nail growth rate during pregnancy, notably towards term. Since no similar association was noted between the IGR and the nail growth rates of the student nurses, it appears that after maturation the major factors influencing growth, including nutritional state, may be evidenced only in the augmented patterns characteristic of the antepartum period.
