RELATION BETWEEN ORAL HEALTH AND THE USE OF AROMATASE INHIBITORS IN WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER

Abstract

Introduction: Hormone therapy is used for treatment of cancer (BC), and the side effects can influence the health of patients. Objective: To evaluate the use of and its manifestations in women carriers of BC. Study Design: We present an integrative review, with a search conducted using the descriptors breast cancer; oral health; aromatase inhibitor; and the Boolean operators E and OU; AND; and OR; in SciELO and PubMed, using English and Portuguese idioms, since 2014. We found 34 articles in PubMed and none in SciELO. Five articles were selected for this review. We excluded articles not related with the scope of the review. Results: There is a relationship between hypoestrogenism and manifestations such as periodontal disease, a decrease of salivary flow, dental losses, dysesthesia, a change in taste, and burning mouth syndrome in menopausal women, with a potentiation of these alterations with the use of hormone therapy due to its antiestrogenic effect. Conclusion: Hormone therapy can influence the health via its antiestrogenic effect, however, further analyses are needed to be conducted to improve quality of life in women with BC.
