Abstract

Two relations are proposed for the energy of an ion E( Z, N) as a function of atomic number Z and number of electrons N. The first uses the 1 Z expansion to relate the energy of positive ions of atomic number Z to that of the neutral atom E( Z−1, Z−1). The second relation is concerned with ionization potentials. It uses a Taylor expansion to second order to relate E( Z, N) to the neutral atom energy E( Z, Z) when N is near to Z. The relation to the work of Pyper and Grant is pointed out.
