Abstract

Experimental structural evidence for the microsegregation of alkali ions from network formers in alumino-silicate glasses is considered in relation to their ionic transport properties. Simple expressions for the activation enthalpies for diffusivity and electrical conductivity, that can be parameterised from the results of local structure spectroscopies, are introduced. Particular consideration is given to the effect on transport properties of replacing silica with alumina and of exchanging one alkali by another in mixed alkali alumino-silicate glasses.
