Abstract

This chapter reviews related research work on machine monitoring and diagnostics. Specifically, the following four categories of work are reviewed: signal processing techniques, artificial intelligence, artificial neural networks, and sensor fusion. Section 3.1 describes two of the most popular signal processing techniques, namely, vibration analysis and parametric modeling. Section 3.2 addresses the use of artificial intelligence approaches to fault diagnostics, particularly expert systems and model-based reasoning. Section 3.3 introduces a new technology, the artificial neural network, and its related studies in the area of machine monitoring and diagnostics. Finally, Section 3.4 provides an overview of the sensor fusion approach.
