Abstract
The number of persons 60 years and older is growing rapidly. The fastest growth is occurring in the group that is 80 years and older. Some directors of nutrition/fitness centers find a constant decrease in the number of participants who come to the congregate sites for their meals. Those centers that have creative programming have been able to attract new seniors and increase the numbers that stay for lunch. A workshop was held to demonstrate four new programs that were being used at some centers in the county. These programs included the following demonstrations: 1. Partnership between the center and three corporations to donate computers to the centers and teach seniors to use the computers. 2. Reminiscing on the topic - Being young 1920s versus 1990s. Seniors recall popular dances and tunes, dating practices and other events. 3. “WEB” TV and developing a “WEB” page. Surf the Internet. 4. Intergenerational project - Our City in the Year 2000. Older adults work with the elementary school children to build this model. Attendees at the workshop were stimulated by the presentations and have started to reproduce some of these programs.
