Abstract
This letter expresses personal opinions with which not everyone will agree. Indeed, it may be that no one will agree. Yet it is well known (reference omitted) that middle age brings a propensity to philosophize, a condition that may become chronic, and having thus offered some kind of an excuse, we can come to the point. The topic is the state of geophysics, as revealed by certain aspects of geophysical reporting. Lest the editor should feel moved to instant rejection (what, no referees?), we hastily add that our barbs are not aimed (exclusively) at AGU publications, tempting targets though they may be. The concerns are more general than any one journal, any one laboratory, or any one country.
