Reinventando a Artigas: Entonces ¿mi nombre suena todavía en mi país?.

Abstract

La figura de Artigas ha tenido un tratamiento muy diferente a lo largo del tiempo. Denostado duramente en las décadas inmediatas a la independencia y tachado por sus detractores contemporáneos de anarquista y enemigo del orden y de la propiedad, fue reivindicado como héroe nacional cuando Uruguay, hacia finales del s. XIX consolida su independencia, convirtiéndose en símbolo de la Unidad en oportunidad en que los partidos blanco y colorado que estaban enfrentados en guerras civiles. En el s. XX, coincidiendo con la consolidación de la democracia política, son puestos de relieve sobre todo los aspectos de la «Patria Vieja», pero será cuando las posturas marxistas entren en la escena cuando se reformule la imagen de Artigas.
