Abstract

Paleoenvironmental implications of Wisconsinan mammalian faunas of the Edwards Plateau in central Texas are reevaluated following reassignment of fossil jumping mice ( Zapus ) from Schulze Cave to the eastern species, Zapus hudsonius . In contrast to previous interpretations, influences of western alpine-meadow associations are viewed as minor, represented by only one species, Sorex vagrans . Instead, the fauna was heavily influenced by eastern mesic-adapted species that retreated north and east during post-Wisconsinan desiccation of the region.
