Abstract
An interpretation which has been given to the non-fluorescent properties of the nπ * singlet state is examined and is shown to be unsatisfactory in the light of recent experimental and theoretical works. A new interpretation is proposed, which considers the effect of pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion.
