Abstract

U.S. Army National Guard members are serving overseas on deployments at a level well above expectations of reserve service, and successful reintegration of citizen-soldiers postdeployment has become a significant concern. This article examines soldiers’ experiences transitioning postdeployment and offers preliminary observations on one state's Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program. Data from interviews and participant-observation identified postdeployment experiences in three areas: (1) remembering the positive, (2) dealing with American civilian sociocultural norms and values, and (3) coping with mental and emotional health needs. Data suggest that the social context of reintegration is important and that existing programs may not adequately meet soldiers’ needs.
