Abstract

The present study focuses on current developments in the area of nanoparticles reinforced magnesium (Mg) based composites. Recently, nano sizedreinforced magnesium metal matrix composites are gaining importance in high performance applications like military, automotive and aerospace industries as a result of their improved physical and mechanical properties.Because desired performance is critical to achieve in micron sized magnesium composites due to their poor ductility, wear and friction response. Researchers find one technique to improve these properties, without any tangible weight penalty of magnesium and its alloys is to add nano size (<100 nm) reinforcement particles to the matrix as create so-called magnesium nanocomposites. Different nano reinforcing materialssuch asCarbon nanotubes (CNTs), Graphene (GNPs),Graphite (Gr), Silicon Nitride (Si3N4), Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3), Boron Nitride (hBNp), Diamond (ND), Titanium Carbide (TiC) and Tungsten Carbide (WC) have been studied. Moreover; the consequence of nano size particles on physical, microstructural, mechanical, corrosive and dry sliding wear properties of magnesium and its composites have been briefly discussed. The future research directions and development on current research area have been discussed and reviewed.
