Abstract
The notion of reification which Georg Lukacs proposes in History and Class Consciousness remains one of the most penetrating tools of critical social theory. Many of Lukacs's specific claims about history--and especially his claim about the proletariat as the subject of history--have not weathered the course of time well. But whatever the theoretical and practical inadequacies of such claims, they do not undermine the continuing cogency of the notion of reification.
