Abstract

This study examines rehabilitation effectiveness among a cohort of 801 long term stroke residents in Virginia nursing homes. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine rehabilitation impact on six physical function outcomes after controlling for the influence of resident differences in rehabilitation potential. Rehabilitation was measured as physical (PT) and occupational (OT) therapy provision, but only the PT results are presented since so few residents received OT. PT was associated with an increase in overall physical activities of daily living (PADL) and eating independence. PT had a small effect on PADL improvement and appears to have more power to prevent PADL regression than to produce PADL improvement.
