Abstract

Recognition of the need for rehabilitation services for the elderly seems to be based more upon the awareness of health care professionals than upon the elderly’s awareness of their own need for services. The elderly need to understand what is available to them and what benefits they can expect from rehabilitation. Through local nursing homes, offer annual free or low cost services to the elderly in the community. These could include general health screenings, blood pressure, vision and hearing screenings, or consumer seminars on rehabilitation and health issues. To maximize the chance of providing coordinated, quality rehabilitation, therapists need to work as a team (Maguire, 1985). Each discipline has a unique and invaluable contribution to make in the rehabilitation process. As rehabilitation advocates the peoples must be leaders in improving access to rehabilitation services, in informing other health care providers of the value of rehabilitation and in assuring that these rehabilitation services are of the highest quality.
