Abstract
At present, Probabilistic Safety Assessments (PSA, level 1+) are carried out in the framework of the Periodic Safety Review (PSR) for all operating nuclear power plants (being in commission at least 10 years) in Germany. The PSR and PSA are basing on the recommendation of the German Reactor Safety Commission (November 1988), which has been a result of its safety examination of all German NPPs after the severe accident in Chernobyl. The concept for the performance of the PSR takes pattern by the safety concept of NPPs consisting of 4 levels: level 1 “normal operation”, level 2 “disturbed operation”, level 3 “accidents” and level 4 “very rare beyond-design events”. The PSR comprises the following parts: plant description (summarized), safety status analysis, probabilistic safety analysis, security analysis and assessment of the results.
