Abstract
Nuclear power plants (NPPs) control the release of radioactive materials to the environment to protect both the members of the public and the biosphere from radiation exposure. Radioactive materials generated during the NPP operation are classified as gaseous, liquid, and solid wastes. Since solid radioactive wastes are normally kept in waste storage in NPPs and sent to a repository for disposal, their release to the environment is very unlikely. On the other hand, gaseous and liquid radioactive materials are released to the environment through discharge routes after adequate reduction and dilution processes. These radioactive materials are not only rigorously monitored by NPPs but also controlled by various regulations.
