Abstract

Studies on mechanisms of sleep regulation in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster have moved the field forward considerably during the past 20 years. In this review, important advances in our understanding of sleep regulation are summarized according to types of molecules involved. Such molecules mediate influences of photoperiod, temperature, nutrition, and different types of disease. These advances on the genetic control of sleep in Drosophila provide crucial insights into the mechanisms of sleep regulation.
