Abstract

In E. coli the rate of ribosome synthesis is strictly dependent on the growth conditions and the regulation is chiefly exerted at the level of transcription of the ribosomal genes. The rate of formation of the individual ribosomal components is carefully balanced and it was recently discovered that this co-ordination is maintained by an elaborate network of regulatory circuits that operate after transcription.
