Abstract

The discovery of the hypophysiotropic peptides marked a large step forward in our understanding of the central regulation of pituitary function. Little is known, however, of the mechanisms which control the release of these substances from peptidergic neurones. The hypothalamic peptidergic neurones receive numerous synaptic inputs, involving various of the conventional amine and amino acid transmitters. In addition it seems likely that local chemical regulatory mechanisms may operate at the level of the presynaptic peptidergic nerve terminals.
