Abstract

In this chapter the regulation of histone gene expression during what has functionally been defined as the cell cycle will be addressed. In doing so three very different biological situations will be considered: continuously dividing cells, nondividing cells which are stimulated to proliferate, and early stages of development where the cell cycle is significantly abbreviated. Because it would be unrealistic to review extensively all the information currently available regarding histone genes and the regulation of histone gene expression, this chapter will be limited to a consideration of the following points: 1) level(s) at which regulation of histone gene expression resides; 2) the relationship between expression of histone genes and other genes expressed when DNA replication occurs; 3) approaches which have been taken to clone human histone sequences; and 4) although it would be presumptuous to propose a comprehensive model for control of histone gene expression, throughout the chapter an attempt will be made to consider the requirements for explaining the regulation of histone genes within the context of what is known about their structural, functional and biological properties.
