Abstract
IMMATURE storage parenchyma cells of sugar-cane stalks contain an acid invertase located in the vacuoles and the outer space (cell walls). The physical properties of the enzyme at both loci appear to be identical. The enzyme is readily made soluble simply by grinding the tissue. Measurements of the rate of internode elongation and total acid invertase show that these two parameters are linearly correlated. This particular acid invertase is absent from the mature storage tissue of sugar cane, but persists in the mature tissue of two closely related species which do not store sucrose in high concentrations. However, in mature tissue of sugar cano other invertases occur but not in the vacuole1–3
