Abstract

In chapters 3 and 4, I have described how diversity has become commonplace in Hackney’s public realm. In this chapter, I aim to describe how in the parochial realm, for example in associations and schools or among neighbours, diversity is just as commonplace as in the public realm. However, in the parochial realm, diversity is more concretely acknowledged and it is sometimes talked about, even though it rarely becomes an issue of contestation. I describe some of the places in which people most often interact across categorical differences, and how people negotiate difference in such interactions.
