Abstract

The spectral dynamics of a cw multimode dye laser is very sensitive to any frequency-dependent loss, such as intra-cavity absorption, and to various types of mode coupling. Depending on the type of mode coupling and its strength, the laser dynamics is stochastic or chaotic. We have observed regular spectral dynamics in a short asymmetric dye laser with a two-mirror cavity. This dynamics is traced to the joint influence of quantum fluctuations, of stimulated Brillouin scattering, and of four-wave mixing in the laser jet.
