Abstract
We present here a theoretical approach to the problem of electron acceleration using the surfatron configuration. We show first how the acceleration process can be described with the help of a perturbation technique. Secondly, we discuss the transition from a regular to a stochastic acceleration regime, making use of the results of Hamiltonian chaos. Finally, we reduce the particle dynamics to a discrete map, generalizing the Karney map to the relativistic domain.
