Abstract

The response of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with PI Control, where a first order irreversible reaction occurs, is studied by simulation. The actions of the PI controllers and the cooling water temperature limitation are used as parameters to show that regular, self-oscillations and chaotic dynamics can appear. The conditions under which regular and self-oscillation occur are investigated taking into account the variation of the eigenvalues of the linearized system at the equilibrium point. A Silkinov type homoclinic orbit which gives chaotic dynamics is also analyzed.
