Abstract
Lowering cholesterol by the treatment with LDL-apheresis using dextran sulfate-cellulose beads affinity column resulted in — regression of coronary atherosclerosis in 38% of the patients including — cases of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), 25 cases of heterozygous FH, and — other cases of mild to severe hypercholesterolemia. In heterozygous FH and others, regression took place in — out of 15 cases where plasma cholesterol was reduced more than 120 mg/dl by apheresis treatment, but in only — out of 14 cases, where cholesterol reduction was less than 120 mg/dl. Regression was also observed in — out of — cases of homozygous FH and there was no case with progression in this group.
