Abstract

ObjectiveTo describe the health care activities carried out by Angiology and Vascular Surgery Services/Units in Spain during 2010. Patients and methodsCross-sectional study. The surgical and endovascular procedures carried out in 2010 were recorded in 83 Angiology and Vascular Surgery Services/Units. A descriptive analysis was made, and the volume of activity was compared regarding teaching accreditation and the activity of the previous year. ResultsThere were a total of 49,896 hospital admissions, 34.6% for emergencies and 65.4% for programmed admissions, with an overall mean stay of 8.4 days. As of 31/12/2010 the waiting list has more venous than arterial diseases (8,790 vs 1,801). Direct arterial surgical activity was similar to that in 2008 (38,012 vs 39,814) and consisted of 2,641 interventions in the supra-aortic trunk, 942 in upper limbs, 139 in the thoracic/thoraco-abdominal aorta, 3,564 in the anatomic aorto-iliac segment (1,218 for elective abdominal aortic aneurysms and 381for emergency abdominal aortic aneurysms), and 1,293 interventions involving an extra-anatomic route, 158 in digestive tract arteries, 48 in renal arteries, 2,851 in the femoral-popliteal segment and 1,519 in the femoral-distal segment of the lower limbs. Venous surgery was also similar (28,898 procedures vs 27,726 in 2009). The most frequently performed intervention in venous surgery was for varicose veins (n=23,044). The endovascular activity increased (12,053 vs 5,165), 841 involved the supra-aortic trunk, 606 the upper limbs, 1,780 were for aortic aneurysms (232 thoracic and 1,548 abdominal), and 7,561 for lower limb arteries. In all, 286,216 examinations were carried out in the Vascular Laboratory (278,901 in 2009). The volume of activity, was significantly higher in teaching centres than in non-teaching centres. ConclusionsCompared to 2009, arterial, venous and vascular laboratory activity was similar, but endovascular activity increased more than 133%. Teaching centres have a larger volume of activity than non- teaching centres.
