Abstract

Children with neuromuscular disorders have to grow into adulthood with a lot of challenges due to their physical disability. Developing an own identity is one of the important developmental tasks a child has to complete during this phase in life. Previous research has demonstrated that dealing with a chronic disease can make this process more complex. Children with chronic diseases are forced to incorporate their disease into their life and their identity. Illness identity is a theoretical construct in developmental psychology to capture the influence of illness on the person's sense of self.
