Abstract

'Chukar' winter club wheat (Triticum aestivum) was developed by the USDA-ARS with assistance from the Washington Agricultural Experiment Station and the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. The pedigree of Chukar is WA7665/'Rulo'. Chukar was released in September 2001 because of its yield potential and disease resistance combined with the quality characteristics desired for the club wheat market class. It is resistant to strawbreaker foot rot (Tapesia yallundae, syn. Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides) and stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. tritici). Chukar is best suited to the intermediate to high rainfall zones of Washington State and northern Idaho.
